HRSA Awards Nearly $10 Million to Provide Oral Health Services for People Living with HIV/AIDS

HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) today announced 64 grants totaling $9.8 million to help dental education programs cover the costs of providing oral health services for Americans living with HIV/AIDS.

"These grants help us achieve two goals -- improving access to oral health care and training new generations of dentists and dental hygienists to provide oral health care for people with HIV," said HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke.  “Treatment supported by the grants includes the full range of oral health services: diagnostic and preventive care, oral health education, oral medicine and oral surgery.”

The Dental Reimbursement Program grants are awarded to eligible dental schools, postdoctoral dental education programs, and dental hygiene education programs under the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act, which is administered by HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau.

Since the CARE Act was first funded in fiscal year 1991, $13.6 billion has been awarded in grants to provide needed health care and associated services for people living with HIV/AIDS. A list of the fiscal year 2003 Dental Reimbursement Program grant awards is below.
