HRSA Awards Nearly $2.9 Million to Improve
Health Professional Training in Geriatrics and Rural Health Care

The Health Resources and Services Administration today announced 17 grants totaling $2.86 million to improve the training of health professionals in geriatrics care and prepare health care providers to practice in rural communities.

Awarded today are:

  • 14 grants totaling $2.03 million under the Geriatric Education Centers program to strengthen the multidisciplinary training of health professionals in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in older Americans; and

  • three grants worth $822,747 under the Quentin N. Burdick Program for Rural Interdisciplinary Training to provide interdisciplinary training for health care students and encourage them to practice in rural communities.

Geriatric Education Center grants go to accredited health professions schools, programs that train physician assistants, and schools of allied health. Since 1985, 375,000 health professionals have received training in geriatrics through the centers.

Since 1990, health professions schools, academic health centers, state and local governments, and other nonprofit organizations have used Quentin N. Burdick Rural Interdisciplinary Training grants to improve health care services in rural areas.

HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration awards and oversees the fiscal year 2001 grants announced today by Secretary Thompson. The lists of grant recipients are attached below.
