HHS Awards Nearly $227 Million to Children’s Teaching Hospitals
to Ensure Quality Health Care for America’s Children

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced payments totaling nearly $227 million to 57 children’s teaching hospitals across the nation to assure that tomorrow’s physicians receive top-quality medical training.  These awards will help children’s hospitals to continue to train and educate the nation’s pediatric workforce.

“Our children deserve the best medical care possible, and that requires the best trained doctors who care for them,” Secretary Thompson said.  “These awards will help to assure a brighter future by supporting top-notch medical training for pediatricians and other pediatric specialists.”

Independent children’s teaching hospitals provide clinical care to young patients, conduct research, and educate and train resident physicians.  These hospitals train about 30 percent of the nation's pediatricians and almost half of pediatric specialists.  They devote nearly half of their patient care to children who are covered under Medicaid or are uninsured.  More than 75 percent of the children who receive care at these hospitals have one or more chronic, inherited conditions.

“These funds go to independent children’s hospitals which train almost a third of all doctors who specialize in caring for children,” said Elizabeth M. Duke, acting administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Today’s awards are intended to provide financial support for independent children’s teaching hospitals similar to that provided through Medicare to other teaching hospitals.  Because independent children's teaching hospitals do not serve the elderly, they receive virtually no graduate medical education (GME) funds through Medicare, which supports more than 1,000 other U.S. teaching hospitals with $7 billion in annual awards.
