Grants Expand Access to Health Care in Alaska, Across U.S.
|
HHS
Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 35 grants totaling
$10.6 million to improve Americans’ access to health care
in underserved communities across the United States.
"These grants will help bring health care services
to people in Alaska and other parts of America, where the
needs are great and the resources few," Secretary Thompson
said. "President Bush and I are committed to expanding access
to care to help more Americans lead healthier lives."
The
fiscal year 2001 grants announced today are:
- 12
awards totaling more than $6.4 million under the Alaska
Frontier Health Project;
- 10
grants totaling almost $3.5 million in Community and Migrant
Health Center New Start/Expansion grants; and
- 13
grants totaling $639,900 under the Healthy Schools/Healthy
Communities (HSHC) Program.
The
Alaska Frontier Health Project will bring basic health care
services to underserved rural and isolated frontier areas
throughout the state.
Funds will increase access to health care services
in areas where such care has not been available.
The
Community and Migrant Health Center grants will help health
centers in eight states expand health care access to more
than 50,000 individuals.
With today’s awards, 97 underserved communities received
more than $38 million in FY 2001 New Start/Expansion grants.

“Community
and Migrant Health Centers are fundamentally important health
care delivery systems that enable the indigent and others
struggling with health care to get the primary care they need,”
said HRSA Acting Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke.
“Health centers
are an effective part of the delivery of health care in America.”
Thirteen
Community Health Centers in 10 states and Puerto Rico were
awarded planning grants through the HSHC Program to plan and
develop full-service, school-based health centers, which offer
comprehensive primary and preventive health care, including
mental and oral health services.
HHS’
Health Resources and Services Administration oversees all
of the programs announcing grants today.
