HRSA Administrator Elizabeth Duke joined HRSA's Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP) for its 20th anniversary celebration and All-Programs Meeting, held August 27 – 29 at Washington, DC's Grand Hyatt Hotel. During a lunchtime plenary session attended by more than 850 grantees, Dr. Duke commended ORHP on 20 years of dedicated service and underscored HRSA's commitment to continue to fund projects that expand access to health services in America's rural areas. In smaller sessions, participants from ORHP's individual grant programs met to focus on the full scope of their work and were joined by Marcia Brand, ORHP director, and Tom Morris, deputy director.

HRSA Associate Administrator for Health Professions Marcia Brand presented outstanding unit and honor awards to Henry Lopez, Director of the Division of Health Careers Diversity and Development, Sheila Norris, Division Deputy, and staff member Jeanean Willis. Also receiving Commissioned Corps awards were BHPr staffers Young Song and Rob Edwards, with BHPr's Nickie Lopes receiving a time-in-service award for Federal service.

On Aug. 20, HRSA announced four grants totaling $467,510 to help states create new and improve existing electronic donor registries for organ and tissue donation.

On Thursday, August 16, HRSA Administrator Elizabeth Duke once again joined the CMS “A Healthier US Starts Here” Prevention Bus Tour at a Capital Hill Mall event in Montana's state capital Helena. During prevention activities, Dr. Duke toured Helena's Cooperative Health Center, where she signed a check for the center's New Access Point award in a special ceremony. The next day in Billings, Dr. Duke and HRSA Senior Advisor Steve Smith presented another New Access Point check to the Deering Community Health Center.


AIDS ribbon  

HRSA awarded $70.6 million on August 13 to improve clinical services for disproportionately affected minorities and women under the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.


   

And on August, 6, HRSA made $18.6 million in grant awards to support health professionals training for nurses, physicians and physician assistants.
